The modern ballet was the last work Wheeldon choreographed for The New York City Ballet during his time as the company's resident choreographer. It premiered on 7 February, 2008, at the New York State Theatre in Lincoln Centre.

Wheeldon choreographed to Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme for violoncello and orchestra in A major (Op. 33), composed between 1876-1877. The music is a nod to the 18th century Rococo style, but is also in the Romantic style, with an emphasis on expression and emotion.

The ballet has no storyline. Instead, Wheeldon sought to express the music through choreography, using light steps and intricate partnering. The movements are traditional, but seen through a modern viewpoint. A work for four dancers, the original cast was Sterling Hyltin, Sara Mearns, Giovanni Villalobos, and Adrian Danchig-Waring, all of whom revised their roles at Saratoga Springs.
